5 Mistakes New Uber Drivers Make, and What They Say About the Job

By November 4, 2026Food for thought

Chris from The Rideshare Guy just put out a list of the five biggest mistakes new Uber drivers are making in 2026. It’s pitched as advice for beginners, but read between the lines and it’s a pretty honest picture of how stacked this job is against the person behind the wheel.

His five: not knowing your costs, accepting every ride, only signing up for one app, not learning your market, and believing Uber’s suggestions. On costs, he’s right that seeing $25 or $30 an hour on the screen isn’t profit. Gas, maintenance, tires, oil changes, depreciation, insurance, and taxes all come out of that number. On accepting rides, he says flat out that with upfront fares, taking every trip is a quick way to lose money.

The one that stuck with me is number five. Chris says the app’s suggestions about where to drive are in Uber’s or Lyft’s best interest, not yours. Think about that from the driver’s seat. The company that controls your pay, your rides, and your account is also handing you advice that isn’t built for you. Every “mistake” on this list is really a cost or a risk the platform has pushed onto the driver: you do the math, you run multiple apps, you second-guess the company’s own directions.

If you’re new, take his advice. Just know that needing this much self-defense to break even is part of the job, not a beginner’s problem.
