Uber insurance policy for Riders only to be covered anytime a ride is requested:
$2500.00 deductible
This covers the riders ONLY up to 1 million dollars of Bodily Injury and the cash value of the vehicle they are riding in. (what do you think my car is worth?) That car is worth way more to me in perfect working order. It has almost no cash value to anyone)
for example, if a rideshare driver, accidentally drives his or her car off a cliff and lands on a pedestrian and everyone is injured, Uber or Lyft do not care about the driver
so there is no uninsured or under-insured motorist at all. So in the example above, everyone in the car and the pedestrian are medically covered, but the driver is not.
Progressive is the Auto Insurance carrier in the state of Florida.
Personal rideshare driver’s auto insurance policy:
I carry a $1000.00 deductible This is whatever amount of auto insurance that the rideshare driver can afford. For example, I now have progressive insurance. Because I drive
for Uber and do nothing else, I have $50,000.00 in uninsured or under-insured motorist and rental car insurance, and Progressive has a rider
that can be purchased for rideshare drivers, so I have that too, This is all I can afford. I did not know this until I got into this accident on 03/25/2023, but the uninsured or uninsured motorist coverage completely turns off once the rider gets in the car. The uninsured or under-insured motorist coverage only covers the driver when they DO NOT have a passenger in the car. My personal rideshare policy cost $290.16 per month. $300.00 is my budget for auto insurance.
Uber rideshare driver’s policy is underwritten by Intact Insurance.
In 07/2021 the Uber app has driver-only insurance that Uber sells to its drivers.
It was advertised to me as no deductible medical insurance up to $1 Million in coverage
for covered accidents. Uber takes 4 cents a mile out of each ride (and they have been since 07/2021 from me). I thought about it
and Uber already pays its drivers very little, but the risk to drivers medically is huge
so I got it just in case of an accident.
So I have been driving since 2018. When I first started driving for Uber, I had a Geico policy. I messaged Geico
and inquired about rideshare driving. They made me cancel my existing policy, which I have had since I was a kid.
I am in my mid 40’s now. I had to get a commercial policy they said, to be covered while driving for Uber. I was like that is strange, but whatever
I had $100,000 in UM coverage and it cost me $309.00 per month. my budget has always been $300.00 for Auto Insurance. They force you to take a picture
of your odometer each year and mail it to them. So I did that when I got the commercial policy, and then the next year (shrug). They sent me
a letter saying that I exceeded the number of miles for the policy and because of that, they refused to renew my policy.
Geico refused to tell me a mileage number that I was not supposed to exceed, they didn’t tell me when I started that policy
or when they refused to renew my policy. They wouldn’t even tell me, how much I exceeded their number by. They did give me
2 months’ notice though so I had the time to find a new policy that I could afford. So I then went to Progressive. I am insured still by them, they hold the blanket policy for Uber and now my personal policy. So on 03/25/2023, I was sitting at
a stop sign in Tampa, FL and a woman hit me head-on. I had 2 Uber passengers in the back, that I picked up on St. Pete Beach. I have been able to avoid many collisions on the interstate and stuff, but I was completely stopped this time so there was no way I could avoid anything.
avoid this accident at all. The police came to the scene and no one was injured enough for an ambulance so one was never requested. The
woman that struck me did not get cited for anything. She had no proof of insurance and she very obviously caused the accident.
The officers did place her at fault on the report though. So even though, I have received tickets for careless driving and no proof
of insurance, the fact that she did not get in any trouble was/is fine with me. My car was fubared but I was still able to drive
it home. Now, in the past, I have gotten into accidents with Geico insurance and they practically stalk you until they appraise your
vehicle and it is repaired, then and only then, they leave you alone. Progressive assigns someone to your case that answers all your questions
and contacts you back right away, which is good because it is truly a horrible time. The person that is supposed to come out and actually
adjust the damage to your car is way different than with Geico. They assign a new “adjuster” each day to come out to adjust the damage to your car
and at the end of each day, they would call my phone and leave a message that they won’t make it that day. Every moment that my car is down it is catastrophic to me.
I use that car to earn with and to grocery shop and to drive my mother around, it’s my only car and I use it for EVERYTHING so this is a huge problem.
after 11 days of this, I just drove it to Pinellas County to Maher Collision Center. They are located inside a Chevrolet dealership, but they repair any type of vehicle
with absolute precision. I learned about them when I was with Geico. What is cool is that they are only 3 blocks away from an Enterprise
rental place. So I told “MJ” the Progressive lady where I was getting my car repaired and the closest Enterprise location to them and she reserved a car
for me. There was nothing left for me to choose from, so I ended up with a convertible Mustang. It was a gas guzzler but it was new and it drove so
I really did not care. I only drove it to the grocery store because it was a gas guzzler. So then the adjuster actually went out there and appraised it.
Maher was repairing it and I got a rental car. I was in pain the day after the accident, so I contacted intact insurance (the insurance Uber sold me) and
I got their answering service, the accident happened on a Saturday. Uber gave me a claim number right away (which was never used) Progressive gave me a claim number
immediately too. I had to wait for Intact Insurance to get into their office and I had to continue calling them several times that day just to get a claim number.
I had no money for a deductible, so I had to wait for their claim number. Finally that Monday, I got a claim number from Intact Insurance. I went to the closest urgent
care place in my car which was also banged up. They treated me and I also used that claim number for a couple doctor’s visits and a couple chiropractor visits.
Then I find out that I have no medical coverage at all from this accident -NONE not even PIP coverage? Progressive did pay for my car to be repaired
and for 1 month of rental car coverage though. I also was able to not pay that crazy $2500.00 Uber insurance deductible. So I stopped all related medical coverage
and made sure they all had the claim number from Intact Insurance which they did. I was like “It sucks that Uber has no UM coverage and that my UM coverage doesn’t cover me, but at least I have this driver insurance otherwise I signed that I would be on the “hook” for this medical coverage. So I started working with Intact to get these medical bills paid. There was a
huge paperwork request from them, more so than I had ever imagined, or that was advertised to me when I made the decision to purchase it. I was speaking to the Intact adjuster and told her that I had been unable to drive for Uber on advice from my doctor for like a month. The next day I got an email that there was now a new adjuster assigned to my case, I asked why
(because I really did not want to submit all that paperwork again) I was told that because I was making a claim for lost wages a new adjuster was assigned. I was like “Okay do I need to resubmit all that paperwork again?” He said he got all of that paperwork, but he needs a breakdown of the “exact” 28 days after the accident, no more no less. That is the limit, this insurance
also only will pay up to $1000.00 in chiropractic care. I was not aware of any of this. My experience with insurance is like this, I buy insurance that I can afford, every once in a while an
accident happens and as long as the accident I was involved in is covered, (which this definitely was so I thought) then the insurance company pays. Not the Uber driver insurance though.
I mean it was actually a good thing that I could function enough to supply them with everything that they asked for which was a lot. I purchased this insurance because I was thinking
that I may not be able to move at all, and I need to be medically covered. Nope, not even close, I need to cancel that stupid Uber driver insurance because all it does is take even more money from Uber drivers. Then just like a couple weeks ago, I got an email, from the urgent care clinic that I owe them $535.00 for the office visit on 03/28/2023. I emailed Intact and asked them why I was getting billed for that? I asked them if anything has been paid to any of the providers from this claim and they told me no there has not. This is almost 3 months since the
accident. Uber driver’s insurance is a scam. Oh, and Uber doesn’t care at all about their drivers either. There is no medical coverage at all for drivers? I did not even know that it was possible to have a $2500.00 deductible which is one of the reasons I don’t drive for Lyft. On my policy when the deductible is raised, my premiums go down. That is why that deductible is so high. Uber and Lyft have the least amount of coverage they can carry by law.
So now I am searching for a commercial policy. I know now, to ask them if this insurance will pay
medical coverage in the event of an accident. It’s like no one knows that we now have this thing
called rideshare, you can now press a button on a mobile device and a car will appear very soon.
Uber and Lyft love this. The entire rideshare industry is brand new, and very lucrative for them anyway,
so the industry can pretty much do whatever they want as long as they pay, well file anyway, income tax.
